This is the original personal from Jim's "Jimmy and the Swingers" CD of acoustic swing jazz. Jazz guitarist Jim Kanas brings this "A team" or Who's Who of musician's musicians together for a night of burning jazz standards and more! Jazz violinist, Randy Sabien started the Berklee School of music string program at age 21 and has appeared internationally for decades. Mandolinist, Don Stiernberg was the famous Jethro Burns' (Homer and Jethro) protegee at age 19 and has recorded with numerous well known and respected musicians. Acoustic bassist Larry Gray is know as one of Chicago's primary figures in jazz and performs regularly with Ramsey Lewis and Larry Correll. Jim Kanas who is most know for his American Roots/multi-instrumentalist format attracts world class musicians as a guitarist and has performed in the Midwest with the likes of Corky Siegel, Howard Levy, Muriel Anderson and many more. Don't miss this rare performance of some of the Midwest's most treasured acoustic string jazz musicians!

the show...The band’s repertoire comprises of classics, jazz standards, uncommon selections and originals running the gamut from swinging renditions of “All of Me”, “Straighten Up and Fly Right” with vocals to a funky bluesy version of “Summertime”. All members are equally versed in bluegrass, country and folk so a unique version of Hank Williams’ classic “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” is a natural! There will be Native American Flute combined with String bass, mandolin and violin, a soundscape that you will not hear anywhere else on the planet! The band turns the Beatles’ “I Will” into a easy Latin based gem but turns around turns around and blows outside on Monk’s “Well You Needn’t”. to bring a broader influence to his guitar music including western swing,

is "root based", eclectic and threaded by the process of improvisation. The
Jim Kanas Trio, playing swing, folk, bluegrass and a mixture of country,

vocal harmonies with guitar, acoustic bass and either fiddle or mandolin.

3pm to 6pm is an open house with folks stopping in for a short or long visit. We will have a new slide show playing in a loop that shows all the steps in building the barn. Worth coming just for that! Want to see some prairie? Short 20 minute tours of the Headquarters prairie, or Isabel’s Knob will be ongoing. Eat snacks, see how the building looks, and say “hi” to friends and acquaintances. We will have cheesy door prizes. For the kids there will be two corn toss games, one short and one regular. Mammal’s skins can be touched and skulls of small mammals can be looked at closely. Talk about fun!At 6pm we will have a potluck dinner.

Jim Kanas, guitars; Doug Lofstrom, bass; and
Chris Ussery, piano. Collectively these veteran artists have performed with numerous well know musicians within a broad eclectic scope of genres. They play straight ahead jazz, swing, blues and originals.

Jim Kanas is most known as a multi-instrumentalist roots musician and was featured on WTTW11, Chicago PBS. Jim is an award winning
jazz guitarist. "Jim is a world class guitarist.... I knew right
away he was a world class guitarist." Multi Grammy award winning,
Victor Wooten. The Chicago tribune calls Kanas
" ...a master..." Chris Ussery, a California transplant to Chicago,
has composed for television and film since the 70s. He has played piano with Muddy Waters, Howard Roberts, Patti Page, and Mac Davis
to name a few. Composer and bassist Doug Lofstrom has been composing prolifically and his diverse scores reflect his ongoing involvement in theater, dance, film and symphonic music. His works have been performed by the St. Louis, Atlanta and Oregon Symphony Orchestras, and the Present Music and CUBE chamber ensembles.
