Michael
Johnson has been photographing rural America for more than thirty
years. In response to Johnson's 1979 exhibition at the Gilbert Gallery,
David Elliott of the Chicago Sun Times wrote, "No other young
artist has come along this year with more rapid authority and left
an acclamation ringing in the air: Here is a master." Since then,
Johnson's work has been exhibited from New York to Tokyo. His large,
black and white silver prints hang in major museums, corporations,
hospitals and private collections in the United States, Europe and
Asia.
A
self-taught photographer, Johnson traces his inspiration to the
European master painters of the 17th century. However, his vision
has been shaped by the land itself, especially by the landscape
of the driftless area of northwestern Illinois. Johnson's love for
the land extends to other areas of his life as well. He has planted
thousands of trees on his family tree farm near Mount Carroll, Illinois,
where he also teaches sustainable forestry techniques and operates
a small sawmill and hardwood lumber business.
